Imperia situated
on the Riviera dei Fiori, was formed in 1923, from the union
of eleven neighbouring boroughs, the two biggest ones being
Oneglia and Porto Maurizio. The city is known for its famous
historical settlements of food factories (particulary oil butalso
pasta) but in time it has recovered to an economy which is
based mainly on tourism (thanks to sea and partuculary mild
climate, even during the winter).
The sea front of Imperia is about to change it's look with
the project of a new port: the "Porto di Imperia",
with it's 1400 berths for pleasure crafts of lenghts
between 5 and 90 metres and an ample series of services and commercial
operations on land, it is destined to become the biggest tourist
port in the Mediterranean. The work for the new port has taken
off with the first stone being laid in March 2006 and the first
works are estimed to be finished in 2008.
The whole port, characterised by the presence of ample green
spaces which are present up to the extremes of the pier, will
be available to the public and suitably equipped with a cycling
area, play area and parking.
